Gonzaga men score big upset

George Josten scored 20 seconds into overtime as Gonzaga ended the regular season by knocking off WCC champ and seventh-ranked Santa Clara in Santa Clara, Calif.

The victory gave Gonzaga (9-8-2, 6-5-1) third place in the WCC. It’s the highest finish for the Bulldogs since 2001 when they tied for second.

Pirates climbing up the polls

Whitworth has moved up one spot in the d3football.com Top 25, despite nobody in the top 10 losing a game. The Pirates (9-0) are now 9th, while Linfield, who the Pirates beat on Saturday, dropped from 15th to 24th.

If Whitworth can beat the University of Puget Sound (7-2) on Saturday, it would be the first time in school history that the Pirates have won 10 games in a season.

Louisville may land title shot

The Louisville Cardinals (8-0) surged into third place in the Bowl Championship Series standings, putting some distance between themselves and the other title contenders.

Louisville has four games left and it looks as if the Cardinals are a good bet to earn a spot in the national championship game if they stay unbeaten.

Ohio State (10-0) and Michigan (10-0) remained at the top of the BCS standings, despite ugly wins on Saturday, and on course to meet Nov. 18 in Columbus with a bid to the Jan. 8 title game in Glendale, Ariz., on the line.

WSU dropped out of the rankings after their 27-17 loss to Arizona.

Armstrong leaves his bike behind

Lance Armstrong barely met his lofty goal of breaking 3 hours in his first marathon, but it came at a price. No Alpine climb on his bicycle had ever been as tough as the New York City Marathon, he said.

“For the level of condition that I have now, that was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done,” said Armstrong, who finished 856th.

Armstrong’s time was 2 hours, 59 minutes and 36 seconds.
