NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Dickies 500

Site: Fort Worth, Texas. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 4:30 p.m.); Sunday, race (NBC, 2:30 p.m.). Track: Texas Motor Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 501 miles, 334 laps. Last race: Tony Stewart, who failed to qualify for the 10-race Chase for the championship after winning his second Cup title last season, held off Jimmie Johnson and won at Atlanta Motor Speedway for his fourth victory of the season and second in the first seven races of the 2006 playoffs. Johnson moved within 26 points of series leader Matt Kenseth with three races remaining, the smallest margin between first and second through the first seven events in Chase history. Last year: Carl Edwards gambled on a late pit stop for tires, charged from sixth to first in 11 laps and won for the second straight week at the Dickies 500. Fast facts: Kenseth finished in the top three in the last two Texas races, while Johnson has top-10 finishes in five of his six starts at the track. … Jeff Gordon has never won at Texas Motor Speedway. He had four straight top-five finishes there from 2001-04, but has failed to finish better than 14th in the three races since then. … Kasey Kahne won the Samsung/RadioShack 500 at Texas on April 9. … NASCAR approved David Ragan to run in this weekend’s race. Roush Racing had to withdraw its entry for Ragan at Atlanta because NASCAR would not allow the 20-year-old driver to compete on the 1.5-mile superspeedway. Next race: Checker Auto Parts 500, Nov. 12, Avondale, Ariz.

NASCAR BUSCH

O’Reilly Challenge

Site: Fort Worth, Texas. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 6:30 p.m.); Saturday, race (TNT, 2 p.m.). Track: Texas Motor Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Kevin Harvick raced to his eighth Busch victory of the season, capitalizing on Carl Edwards’ sloppy restart in overtime at Memphis Motorsports Park to pull to the front and lead teammate Clint Bowyer across the finish line. Last year: Harvick overcame the death of his father-in-law earlier in the week to win the O’Reilly Challenge. Fast facts: Juan Pablo Montoya finished 11th in his NASCAR debut last weekend. … Harvick has won three times in the last five starts and has 15 straight top-10 finishes. … No polesitter has won a Busch event at Texas. … Kurt Busch won the O’Reilly 300 at Texas on April 8. Next race: Arizona.Travel 200, Nov. 11, Avondale, Ariz.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Silverado 350

Site: Fort Worth, Texas. Schedule: Thursday, qualifying, 8 p.m.; Friday, race (Speed Channel, 8:30 p.m.). Track: Texas Motor Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 220 miles, 147 laps. Last race: Mike Bliss grabbed the lead on a restart 10 laps from the end at Atlanta Motor Speedway and held off Terry Cook for his first truck victory in four years. Bliss, who now has 13 truck victories, got his first series win since a race at South Boston, Va., in September 2002. Last year: Todd Bodine slipped under Mike Skinner with 23 laps to go and then held the lead after a final restart to win The Silverado 350. It was his third victory at Texas, one short of the series record held by Brendan Gaughan, who won four in a row there from 2002-03. Fast facts: Bodine, who has an 86-point lead over Johnny Benson in the standings, has won three of the last four Texas races. On June 9, he edged Skinner by .116 seconds, the closest finish for a truck race at the track. … Bodine is the defending champion in each of the three remaining races. … Benson has three top-five finishes in four career starts at Texas. … Skinner has won four straight poles at Texas, including the June event. He has yet to win at the track, but did finish second in the last two races. … Greg Biffle clinched the championship in the 2000 event, becoming the only driver in series history to do so before the last race of the season.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Sebastien Bourdais made it three series championships in a row, and his French countryman Nelson Philippe picked up his first Champ Car win in an incident-filled Indy 300 at Australia on Oct. 22. Bourdais secured his third series title when A.J. Allmendinger, his closest pursuer for the season championship, crashed out on the 19th lap. Next race: Mexico City, Nov. 12.

FORMULA ONE

Last race: Fernando Alonso became a Formula One champion again on Oct. 22, a day when Michael Schumacher retired to end a great career.
