The Slice: Greeters move but still get in the way

The ability of people here to change and adapt is truly remarkable.

Just consider this. No matter how many times they revise the security procedures at Spokane International Airport, people meeting arriving passengers will always find new places to stand that totally block foot-traffic routes for everyone else.

“Re: the mystery photo in Sunday’s Slice: It would appear the case has been solved.

“Just wondering: Does your knowledge of dry-side conservatism make you laugh when you encounter the usual “Northwest” stereotypes in the national media?

“Spanning the globe to rate roadkill regions: Walt and Myrt Powers, Janet Culbertson, and Rosemary Wood all reported seeing an incredible number of dead animals on the highways in different parts of Australia.

Coeur d’Alene’s Tony and Linda Talbot said stretches of road in New Zealand are the worst they’ve seen in terms of critter carnage.

The graphic details are not breakfast compatible.

“You know you’ve stopped rockin’ when …: Not only do you no longer attend social gatherings, but when you hear about a party involving people in your circle and ask if anyone got out of hand, the answer is always “No.”

“Two-fer Tuesday: 1. Colbert’s Barb Beck said her back door is only 65 feet from railroad tracks. It’s sort of nostalgic because her dad was a train engineer.

2. Spokane Valley’s Amber Parviainen and her sister-in-law call each other to critique the baby names in the S-R’s birth listings.

“Having the same phone number for the longest time: “I thought I might have had one,” wrote Christopher Hesse, an accountant with LeMaster & Daniels.

The Spokane firm’s roots go back to 1908. An early phone number was “Main 4316.”

Today, it’s 624-4315.

“I was hoping that 4316 was another one of our lines, but apparently not,” said Hesse. “Somewhere, we lost a digit.”

And that’s something a 98-year-old accounting firm tries to avoid.

“It’s a compliment: If someone says you are as a cute as one of those 3.6 ounce Ben & Jerry’s mini-cartons.

“Warm-up questions: What local business has the best candy bowl? Who around here has the mother of all Lilac bushes? What one quality must a platonic roommate possess? Do you know of a long-distance marriage that worked for more than 10 years? What’s your “Yeah, I could see myself living there” city? What area school has the best-looking letter jackets?

“Today’s Slice question: What Inland Northwest stuffed animal has logged the most air miles?
