Pair named Washington Scholars

Two seniors in the Spokane Public Schools school district were recently selected as Washington Scholars. The program awards two high school seniors in each of the state’s 49 legislative districts scholarships with up to four years of tuition and fees at any college or university in Washington. Students are nominated for the scholarship by their high school principals.

The winners are: Michelle Sybouts of Ferris High School and Tim Hill of North Central High School. Dylan Versteeg of Ferris High School was selected as an alternate.

•Emily Calkins of Spokane was recently awarded the George W. Davis Memorial Prize in Religion at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn. The award is given every year by the Religious Studies Department to a junior who has achieved a high degree of excellence. Calkins, the daughter of Beth and Eric Calkins of Spokane, is a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Sara Hillard recently received a $4,000 Herbert L. Eastlick Scholarship in pre-medicine at Washington State University. Hillard, a 2003 graduate of the Oaks Academy, is the daughter of Kathleen and Daniel Hillard of Spokane. She is studying neuroscience and pre-veterinary medicine.

Elizabeth Ellison of Spokane recently graduated from Montana State University, Billings, with a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication.

■Army National Guard Pvt. Jorge Alvarado recently graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Alvarado, the son of George and Abelina Alvarado of Othello, Wash., is a 2005 graduate of Othello High School.

•The Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation of Washington recently announced the recipients of the organization’s annual scholarships. The amounts vary from $2,500 to $1,500. The students are listed by their hometown.

Spokane: Christopher Burke, Catherine Jhung, Kelsey McManis, Tessa Meserve, Katie Rowlett, Heidi Sedra, Amber Vandenberg and Kristin Watts.

St. John: Angela Jefferies.

Several previous recipients also had their scholarships renewed. They are: Rachel Austin, Brianna Ryan and Gillian West, all of Spokane, and Ian Tuner of Hunters, Wash.

• Four area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Craig Arsenault, a 2005 graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School in Coulee Dam, is the son of Marge Arsenault of Electric City, Wash.

Air Force Airman Jeffrey Baird, the son of Angela Baird of Spangle, is a 2005 graduate of Liberty High School in Spangle.

Air Force Airman Stephen Jech, the son of Loretta Jech of Medical Lake, is a 2004 graduate of Cheney High School.

Air Force Airman Ashton Kepler, a 2004 graduate of Medical Lake High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Melissa Johnson of Medical Lake.

Idaho

Ellen Crecelius recently graduated magna cum laude from Concordia College, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in English literature and German. Crecelius is the daughter of Rod and Sandy Crecelius of Hayden.
