Bored kids? Send them back to class

School has officially been out for about a week now, and chances are good the kids are starting to get a little bored.

One way to keep them entertained is to send them off to summer classes that will be held throughout the area.

Mobius Kids in River Park Square, 808 W. Main Ave., is offering classes for kids this week and next.

Kids ages 6 through 8 can study prisms and learn about rainbows in Colors and Kaleidoscopes Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The cost is $20 for Mobius members and $25 for nonmembers.

If your child is interested in astronomy, they can take Astro Night, a class for kids ages 8 through 10 Wednesday from 8 to 11 p.m.

Kids will get the opportunity to study comets, learn about constellations, and will climb to the top of River Park Square to look at the stars.

The cost is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

Aspiring marine biologists ages 8 through 10 can take Coral Reef Explorer on July 5 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Students can touch real coral, sea urchins and shells as well as creating a watercolor painting and learning about life forms in a coral reef.

The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

Crystals, Rocks and Minerals will teach kids ages 8 through 10 about the different kinds of rocks and crystals on July 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The class will include a trip to Riverfront Park for a rock hunt.

The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

On July 7 and 21, children ages 5 through 10 who are crazy for Legos can play with thousands of them from noon to 2 p.m. at Lego Camp.

The cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

And if parents want to get hands-on with the kids, there is the Little Tikes Art Camp for little ones ages 2 through 4 on July 6, 12, 20 and 26 from 10 to 11 a.m.

The class will explore art and painting.

The cost is $7 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Football and cheer camps

The YMCA Grid Kids Tackle Football program is kicking off in July.

Members of the Spokane Shock football team will be on hand for this camp for kids in first through the eighth grade.

During the week of July 10 through 13, kids in first and second grade will meet from 10 a.m. to noon. Third- and fourth-graders will meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $85.

Fifth- and sixth-graders will meet July 31 through Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon and seventh- and eighth-graders will meet from 12:3 to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $120.

All camps will be held at Centennial Middle School, 915 N. Ella Road, Spokane Valley.

Sometimes kids are more interested in cheering the team on, rather than playing the game.

For those kids, the YMCA is offering cheerleading camp for kids ages 6 through 14. Camp will be held July 10 through 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. The location has yet to be determined. The cost for cheerleading camp is $52.

For more information about any of these camps or to register, call the YMCA at (509) 838-3577, ext. 169.

College for kids

Boys and girls age 9 to 13 can enroll in Spokane Falls Community College’s Summer Youth College, which will be held July 10 through 14 and July 17 through 21.

Teens ages 14 through 16 can also take advantage of a similar program, “Totally Teen Experience” July 24 to 28.
