Playwrights’ fest begins tonight

Jamie Tobias Neely Staff writer

Love theater but yearn to mix things up with a bit of competition?

Spokane Civic Theatre has just the answer. Its Playwrights’ Forum Festival will run this weekend and next, presenting five original scripts. A committee of judges will chose a winner, and audience members will also have a chance to vote on their favorite.

These scripts have been selected from across the country.

Tonight, Friday and Saturday, four one-act plays will be presented. Here’s the lineup:

•”Holy Moly!” by Wendy Shepard of Friday Harbor, Wash.

•”The Tooth Fairy” by Fred Cooprider of Salem, Ore.

•”His Critical Condition” by Carl Williams of Houston.

•”Paradise Lost” by Scott Munson of San Jose, Calif.

On June 15, 16 and 17, a full-length play, “Sonnet 23” by Will Gilman of Spokane, will be produced.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Directors of the shows are Sandy Hosking, Liz McAlpine, Stuart McKenzie, Susan Hardie and Brooke Bailey.

Each production will be in the Firth Chew Studio Theatre on the lower level of the Civic, 1020 N. Howard St., entrance off Dean Avenue.

Tickets are $15 for both the one-act and full-length productions, or $10 for just one night. Call the theater box office at (509) 325-2507 or contact TicketsWest at (509) 325-SEAT, (800) 325-SEAT or www.ticketswest.com.
