Yzerman retires after 22 years with Detroit

The Spokesman-Review

Steve Yzerman, the Red Wings’ longtime captain who played his entire 22-year NHL career with Detroit, is retiring.

The 41-year-old Yzerman, who was 18 when he joined the Red Wings in 1983, ended months of speculation about his future when he announced his retirement at a news conference Monday.

Yzerman led Detroit to three Stanley Cups and playoff appearances in each of the last 15 years of his career. Only Gordie Howe holds as many franchise records. He has been Detroit’s captain since 1986, making him the longest-serving captain in league history.

His 692 goals rank eighth all-time, while he is seventh on the career list with 1,063 assists.

•Star defenseman Chris Pronger was traded by the Edmonton Oilers to the Anaheim Ducks for right wing Joffrey Lupul, defenseman Ladislav Smid and three future draft picks.

•Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Ryan VandenBussche was charged with assaulting three police officers in Turkey Point, Ontario, during a late-night brawl and was subdued with a Taser gun and pepper spray.

Wallace leaving Pistons

Free-agent center Ben Wallace is leaving the Detroit Pistons to sign with the Chicago Bulls, a person within the NBA said.

The person, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because NBA free agents can’t officially sign contracts until July 12, said the Pistons offered Wallace a four-year contract worth about $50 million. That would have made him the highest-paid player on the team next season with a salary of $11.5 million.

•The Milwaukee Bucks signed second-round draft pick David Noel to a multiyear contract.

Noel, the 39th pick overall in last week’s NBA draft, averaged 12.9 points and 6.8 rebounds last season as a senior at North Carolina.

Gatlin withdraws

Justin Gatlin, the 100-meter world-record holder and Olympic champion, withdrew from the Grand Prix meet in Athens, Greece, because of a mild leg strain.

Asafa Powell, with whom Gatlin shares the world mark of 9.77 seconds, turned down a late request to be a replacement at the Tsiklitiria meet, organizers said.

On May 12 in Qatar, Gatlin tied the record set by Powell at the Tsiklitiria event last year. Gatlin and Powell are to face each other at the London Grand Prix on July 28.
