Yankees 8, Red Sox 5 (10): At Boston, Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, added a solo shot in the 10th, Jorge Posada also homered, and New York extended its lead in the East with the victory over Boston.

Twins 7, White Sox 3: At Minneapolis, Johan Santana held Chicago’s offense to one run in seven innings and Michael Cuddyer had two hits and two RBIs in Minnesota’s victory, cutting Chicago’s lead to one game in the wild-card race.

Rangers 7, Tigers 6: At Detroit, Hank Blalock hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth, a Gary Matthews throw to the plate kept the lead the next inning, and Texas held on after overcoming a six-run deficit in a win over Detroit.

Athletics 6, Royals 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Nick Swisher hit a two-run home run and Kirk Saarloos survived six shaky innings for his third straight victory, leading surging Oakland to a victory over Kansas City.

Indians 9, Devil Rays 4: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jhonny Peralta hit his first career grand slam during a five-run sixth and Travis Hafner homered in his third straight game to help Cleveland get the win over Tampa Bay.

Blue Jays 9, Orioles 2: At Baltimore, Roy Halladay retired the first 16 batters in earning his major league-leading 16th win, and Toronto hit three home runs in a rout of Baltimore.
