OUTPEOPLE

Rino’s long run

Red Resort in Rossland dedicated a ski run this season to Rino DeBiasio, and it would be fitting if it were a very long run. DeBiasio, 84, retired from Red’s volunteer ski patrol last month after 50 consecutive years of service. He joined the patrol in 1956, eight years after western Canada’s first chairlift was built on Red Mountain.

OUTSTANDING

Bikers join airmen to reconstruct trail

The Fat Tire Trail Riders mountain bike club continues to make improvements in the multiple-use trails at Riverside State Park.

One of their latest projects reconstructed a section of the Civilian Conservation Corps trail built in the 1930s using rock-wall cribbing along the Spokane River at Devil’s Toenail rapid.

Six club members teamed with the 92d Maintenance Operations Squadron from Fairchild Air Force Base to restore this stretch of history on April 8.

OUTSKI

Have skins, will ski

Grooming and chairlift rides have ended for the season, but not the skiing at the region’s alpine ski resorts.

Skiers have been picking their days to put on skins, climb the white but empty slopes and make turns on velvety spring corn snow.

Plan on an early start. The best spring skiing is in the morning hours as the sun starts to warm the open slopes after a clear night of freezing temperatures.

OUTLOOK

Best fishing times

The U.S. Naval Observatory lists peak fishing times in these lunar tables. To maximize results, be fishing at least one hour before and continue one hour after given times, which apply to all time zones.
