Cougars storm back for victory
Jared Prince hit his third home run of the season to cap a five-run ninth inning as Washington State rallied for a 10-7 win over Northern Colorado in non-conference baseball action Saturday at Greeley, Colo.
Travis Coulter’s one-out single with the bases load tied the game in the top of the ninth, and one out later, Prince homered over the left-field fence to give the Cougars (25-15) their first come-from-behind victory of the season.
Northern Colorado dropped to 14-24.
•Aaron Poreda went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out five, as San Francisco (25-17, 7-4) scored an 8-1 win over Gonzaga (25-15, 6-5) in West Coast Conference play at Avista Stadium.
•Whitworth left a combined 29 men on base, and – despite knocking out a combined 29 hits – the Pirates (17-17, 11-9) lost a pair of Northwest Conference games to Puget Sound (15-19, 11-9) by 7-6 scores in Tacoma.
The Pirates racked up 16 hits and left 17 men on base in the opener. In the second game, the Loggers’ Brent Weidenbach singled home Shaun Kiriu in the bottom of the ninth to earn the victory.
Softball
Justine Williams was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Tracy Reed was 2 for 3 with two runs scored as North Idaho College won the opening game of a Scenic West doubleheader 7-2 over Snow (18-25-1, 14-17) at Ephraim, Utah.
In the second game, Spring Montgomery (East Valley) went 2 for 4 with three RBIs as NIC (30-15, 20-12) finished the sweep by holding on to beat Snow 7-6.
•Jo Sonnett threw a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 12, and hit a three-run homer in the fourth as Whitworth (23-9, 18-4) won the opener of a Northwest Conference doubleheader 5-2 over Willamette in Salem, Ore.
In the second game, Blair Cuny went five innings of scoreless relief as Willamette (16-12, 12-6) beat the Pirates 6-1.
Tennis
Saint Mary’s shut out Gonzaga 4-0 in the second round of the West Coast Conference men’s tournament in Moraga, Calif.
On the women’s side, San Francisco shut out Gonzaga 4-0 at Santa Clara.
Both teams will play for seventh place at 9 a.m. today, the men against Portland in Moraga, and the women against host Santa Clara.
•Both the men’s and women’s teams from Whitworth finished in third place at the Northwest Conference Championships in Yakima.
The men fell to Linfield 7-0, while the women were beaten by Puget Sound 6-3.
Pacific Lutheran beat Whitman 5-2 to win the men’s title, while Linfield beat Pacific Lutheran 8-1 to win its fifth straight women’s title.
