Erin Mettler Winner In Letter-Writing Contest
Erin Mettler, a seventh-grade student at North Pines Junior High, was named a district winner in the RespecTeen Speak For Yourself letter-writing contest.
Mettler wrote a letter to U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt.
She was one of 13,000 students nationwide to enter letters written to their congressmen, stating their views on youth-related public policy issues.
She is is the daughter of Anne and Jan Mettler.
Four Eastern Washington students graduated this spring from Heritage College in Toppenish, Wash.
The students, their degrees and hometowns, are:
Phyllis L. Grant, master of education, Cheney; Neil A. Beaver, bachelor of arts, Keller; Ethel M. Goodman, master of education, Republic; and Marilee Manion, master of education, Spokane.
Francesca Salomone, a Ferris High School graduate, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Sons of Italy Grand Lodge of the Northwest.
Salomone, who plans to major in education at Eastern Washington University, is the daughter of Francisco and Marisa Salomone.
Doug Winchell, an eighth-grade teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Pullman, received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Pullman Kiwanis Club, as voted upon by the students.
Winchell also coaches junior varsity girls soccer at Pullman High School and has been promoted to varsity coach.
Army Pvt. Richard P. Blair graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Wynesville, Mo. He is the son of Collette A. Blair, Spokane.
Rebekah C. Stroud-Wright, granddaughter of Calla L. Edwards, Spokane, earned an associate degree in applied science from the Community College of the Air Force. She was also recently promoted to assistant communications circuit manager at Naval Air Station, Key West, Fla.
Army Sgt. Stacey A. Roberge has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal for demonstrating outstanding achievements or meritorious service.
Roberge, son of Edward and Gloria Roberge of Loon Lake, Wash., is a tank commander stationed at Fort Knox, Radcliff, Ky.
Jeff Knutson was named to the Dean’s List for spring semester at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., where he is majoring in aeronautical science. He is the son of Norman and Marla Tysseland, Spokane.
Several more Spokane-area high school graduates have received scholarships to attend various colleges and universities. They are:
Adam Mortensen was a recipient of a $20,000 Wal-Mart Competitive Edge Scholarship to attend Washington State University.
A graduate of West Valley High School, Mortensen also participated in Knowledge Bowl and is a National Honor Society member.
He is the son of Jerry and Becky Mortensen.
Zachary Cazier, a class valedictorian at Ferris High School and a member of the National Honor Society, received Washington State University’s Glenn Terrell Presidential Scholarship for $1,750.
Jamie Schab, a graduate of University High School, was selected by U-High teachers and counselors to receive the $1,000 William C. Lebow Scholarship. Schab plans to study premedicine at Carroll College in Helena, Mont.
Adam W. Mortensen received a $500 entering freshman scholarship from the electrical and computer engineering department of Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont.
