Rogers Volleyball Improves To 3-0

Any theories that Rogers volleyball would come back to earth were dispelled Tuesday.

Angel Fairbanks had nine kills and three blocks to lead the Pirates (3-0) to a 15-7, 15-9, 15-6 sweep of visiting Mead (3-1) in the Greater Spokane League. With the win, Rogers tied idle Ferris for first place.

Jamie Christensen added 20 assists and Monica Abrahamson eight aces for Rogers, under first-year coach Anna Vanderpool.

Rogers hasn’t had a winning league record since 1982. Until a 3-13 record in 1994, no Pirates team had won three league matches in nine years.

Riding the strength of 12 aces, including seven by Meghann Green, Gonzaga Prep (3-1) tied Mead for third with a 15-5, 15-3, 6-15, 15-11 win at North Central.

Jen Williams had 16 kills and Story Tombari 33 assists for Prep, the defending league champ. Sarah Menard led the Indians (1-2) with nine kills and 11 assists.

Erasing a 10-0 second-game deficit, Lewis and Clark (1-2) beat visiting Central Valley 15-9, 15-10, 15-9 as Erin Naipo - injured in LC’s first two matches had 16 kills and 12 digs.

Naipo’s two kills and an ace started the Tigers to a 4-0 first-game lead. LC also led the third game 4-0 then fought off a Bears rally on two Shannon Snow aces. Crystal Lee led CV (1-3) with 12 kills and seven digs.

Michelle Etter’s 15 kills and nine blocks rallied visiting Shadle Park (1-3) to a 12-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-9 win at University.

Shadle’s Megan Sturm added 22 assists. Gretchen Smith had 12 kills, and Julia Yoke 26 assists and four aces for the Titans (0-4).

Lindsey Braff served 10 consecutive fourth-game points, including six aces, as Colville (1-1) beat visiting West Valley 15-7, 9-15, 15-5, 15-2 in the Frontier League.

Colville scored the match’s first 10 points, served poorly in game two, then rallied in the third game behind Kristin Cornwall’s three aces. Chantelle Frost had six kills for the Eagles (0-1).

Defending league champion Clarkston opened with a 15-2, 15-5, 15-6 victory over visiting Cheney, as Rochell King had 13 assists and four blocks and Anna Kate Wilson five kills and seven digs.

The East Valley (0-0) match at Pullman (1-0) wasn’t reported.

Liz Carlin and Elise Turbeville also scored for the Blackhawks. Cinnamon Anderson had 20 saves for Clarkston.

At East Valley, freshmen Kristen Carlson and Jessica Bowen scored to lead the Knights over Pullman 3-0. Kirsten Walz also scored for EV.

New-look Albi Stadium is going to have another look soon.

Tonight’s Mead at CV soccer match is being moved to Albi Stadium at 4 p.m. Thursday, prior to the 6:30 Mead-Shadle Park football game.

LC activities coordinator Alan Bredy, the GSL’s soccer coordinator, said the match was moved because of construction at CV. He said there would be no admission charge until the usual time for football, but there will be the usual Albi Stadium parking charge.

Also, the Mead at U-Hi match scheduled for Sept. 30 is headed to Albi at 4 p.m. Oct. 3, again because of construction in the Valley. There also will be a single football game that night.

The GSL pays a flat fee for Albi rental, even if there is one game. The moves offer a good chance to check out the new, wide surface and artificial turf for soccer.

“Since the lines are on the turf, it was a good opportunity to get games in there,” Bredy said. “We’re certainly hoping to get more games in there, get more teams involved, as these situations present themselves.”
