Trial Begins In Shooting Death

From Staff And Wire Reports

A jury will begin hearing testimony today in the trial of Kenneth Gooch, accused of killing a Spokane man who was under surveillance for drug dealing.

Gooch, 40, also of Spokane, is charged with killing Vito J. Tombari with a handgun after the two quarreled over money Jan. 15.

Investigators said Gooch went to Tombari’s house, argued with him, then shot him in his doorway. Before he died, the 40-year-old Tombari reportedly told police Gooch had shot him.

Tombari had an extensive criminal record, including convictions for possession of drugs and assault.

Gooch has also been convicted of several crimes, including being a felon in possession of a gun.

Susan Boatright, 35, is expected to testify against Gooch. Police say Boatright went by car with Gooch to visit Tombari the night of the shooting.

Defense attorney John Rodgers is expected to say Gooch acted in self-defense. The trial is expected to last about a week.
