Man Killed In Shootout With Police

Compiled From Wire Services

An elderly man was killed and a Seattle police officer wounded Monday evening when the man left his Housing Authority apartment, firing at police, after a 5-hour standoff, authorities said.

Police returned fire.

A nursing supervisor said the man died at Harborview Medical Center. The officer was reported in satisfactory condition. The nature of his injuries was not disclosed.

No names were immediately available on either man, police spokeswoman Christie-Lynne Bonner said. The age of the dead man was not immediately available but Bonner said she had heard he was in his 80s.

The standoff started Monday afternoon after a Housing Authority staff member reported a repairman was shot and wounded by the apartment resident when the repairman approached the apartment to work on a stove, police said. The repairman suffered a minor wound.

Bonner said officers responding to the 911 call at 1:20 p.m. surrounded the apartment and tried to contact the elderly resident but got no response.

At about 7 p.m., members of a police emergency response team moved into position to observe the man and were fired upon, Bonner said.

Officers were trying to flush the man out with an irritating chemical gas when he rushed out, firing, she said.
