French Ambassador Talks With Army Rebels

Compiled From Wire Services

French troops surrounded army mutineers holed up in a military camp Thursday, and the French ambassador met with rebel leaders in hopes of reopening peace talks with the president they want to oust.

Civilian protesters angered by the French intervention burned down the French cultural center earlier Thursday, but moves by the former colonial power brought hopes for peace after nearly a week of turmoil.
