Ferris Nails Down Gsl Baseball Title

Ferris clinched its third Greater Spokane League baseball title in five years with a 17-6 win over visiting Shadle Park on Friday.

The Saxons (11-4) won for the ninth time in 11 games while the Highlanders lost their sixth of nine.

Ferris and Mead, or Ferris and Central Valley, could finish the regular season at 11-5. However, Ferris swept the Panthers and Bears and will definitely be the No. 1 seed to district play next week.

As for resurgent Mead (10-5), the Panthers have won four straight. They defeated Gonzaga Prep 5-3.

Prep (10-6) finished the season playing .500 ball after a 5-1 start.

Rogers defeated University 9-2, the Titans’ fifth loss in seven games.

Idle Central Valley (10-5) has won nine of its last 11.

At Ferris, Saxons sophomore Eric Munhall was 2 for 4, scored four runs and hit a solo homer.

At G-Prep, the Panthers’ Cory Oden singled in Adam Morris with the winner in the top of the ninth.

At University, Rogers’ Bob Kuck and Brian Liberty each had three hits and an RBI in the third.

At North Central (4-11), Lewis and Clark (2-13) got its second win, 9-7 over the Indians. The Tigers’ Jason Purdy had a no-hitter through four innings before being relieved. He then came back in the seventh to preserve the win.

Davenport will be playing for a share of the Bi-County League championship when the Gorillas meet Liberty in a makeup doubleheader Monday.

Davenport is 13-1. Wilbur-Creston is first at 15-1.

Ahead are the District 7 playoffs against the Panorama League to determine State B berths. That tournament starts May 9.

In the Panorama’s postseason tourney, Northwest Christian defeated Northport 7-0 and Republic beat Curlew 19-2.

Those winners will play Monday at Kettle Falls to determine the No. 1 and 2 seeds to regionals.

Northport and Curlew will determine No. 3 and 4 seeds when they play Monday at Kettle Falls at 10 a.m., followed by NWC and Republic.

Softball

Watch out for Rogers.

The Pirates (6-9) took a step closer to securing the GSL’s sixth and final berth to districts with a 1-0 win over first-place University.

The Pirates appear to be hitting stride. They’ve won four of their last six, and three of those wins have come against top-four teams - Mead, 12-3; University, 12-3; Gonzaga Prep, 9-7.

Should the Pirates get to district, they will play either Mead or U-Hi.

At U-Hi, the Pirates’ Crystal Perry singled before scoring after two Titans errors. Tara Bertholf scattered six hits and walked no one.

At G-Prep, the Panthers beat the Bullpups 7-2 in their regular-season finale. Mead’s Holly Vanwert struck out eight and scattered two hits. G-Prep didn’t score until the last inning.

Mead’s Andrea Carnahan finished with three hits and Jen Rand had two.

At North Central (10-5), the Indians moved into third place past G-Prep with a 6-1 win over Lewis and Clark (3-12). The Tigers were mathematically eliminated from a district berth.

NC’s Denise Devereaux moved her record to 3-1 as she scattered eight hits and gave up no walks.

Stacey Fisher and Janessa Karstens finished with two hits apiece for NC.

And at Ferris, the Saxons (5-10) stayed in the race for a district berth with a 7-4 win over Shadle Park (1-14).

For the Saxons, Kylee Curry went the distance, and finished the week with 35 innings pitched.

And in getting two hits against the Highlanders, Curry also finished the week with 10 hits, two being doubles and one a triple.

She had a two-run double in Ferris’ six-run fourth inning.

Golf

In the GSL Girls All-League Tournament at Esmeralda, Mead’s Britney Holt shot a one-over-par 73 to take the lead after the first round.

Ferris’ Jennifer Hatle finished at 5-over with a 77, and G-Prep’s Jackie Shea finished with a 79. The top 24 scores advance to the second round on Tuesday at Downriver.

The top nine advance to state.

In team action, Mead is at 331, Ferris 335 and G-Prep 347.

Tennis

In the 51st Inland Empire Tennis Tournament, in boys singles action, Mead’s Ryan Moran defeated Richland’s Mark Gorchels 6-2, 6-0 and Wenatchee’s Reid Wiggins 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals today.

In girls singles, defending champion Leslie Whitten of University defeated Lake City’s Emily Phillips 6-0, 6-0 and Wenatchee’s Seana Parsons 6-0, 6-2.

Mead’s Amy Fong also advanced to the semis.
