Vna Honors Physicians For Skills, Elderly Care

Dr. Leonard Vanderbosch and Dr. Bruce Dentler were named Physician Partners by the Visiting Nurses Association’s Home Health Care Services for their communication skills and expertise in caring for the elderly.

Others recognized at the VNA’s annual awards ceremony included the Washington State University College of Pharmacy as Supporter of the Year for its program of placing students and faculty at VNA.

Sylvia Stafford, recently retired VNA development coordinator, received the Lifetime Supporter Award for creating VNA’s fund-raising program to care for patients without insurance or financial resources to pay for home health care.

The Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council recently honored several people with its Annual Substance Abuse Prevention Awards.

Drug Free Students of the Year were JaNae Wagner, Sean Crooks and Lynn Fox. Recipients of the Student Achievement Award for Becoming Drug Free were Debin Pate and Robert Zehnder. Receiving the Outstanding School Personnel for Prevention Efforts Award was Blaine Downey. Outstanding Community Adult for Prevention Efforts was Lynn Everson. Outstanding School Group for Prevention Efforts were North Central SAFTYE Club and the Oakesdale DARE Sixth Graders.

Outstanding Citizen/Family Group was the Mattozzi Family. Outstanding Community Group for Prevention Efforts were the Washington State Patrol, Spokane County Sheriff’s Department and the Spokane Police Department. Washington (State) Drug Free Youth Chapter was Lakeside High School Anna Bersagel was honored for her work with the GSSAC Prevention Youth Council, and Sen. Brad Owen was cited for his Exemplary Prevention Efforts in the Legislature and across the state on behalf of youth.

The Odessa (Wash.) High School Future Business Leaders of America was named Outstanding Chapter for Washington state at the group’s state leadership conference.

The group’s leaders are Amy Hardung, president; Scott Knerr, vice president; Melissa Kagele, treasurer; Lien Scherr, secretary; Scott Kramer, associated student body representative; and Kelly Read and Lindsay Shorzman, reporter/ historians.

Sixteen chapter members will compete at the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., in July.

S. Brady Bates received his Eagle Award, the highest honor bestowed the Boy Scouts of America.

Bates’ Eagle project was to refurbish the parking area, build a bike rack and replace a broken gate at the entrance of Valleyford County Park.

He is the son of Steve and Julie Bates and is an eighth-grade student at Freeman Junior High School.

Washington State University-Spokane’s Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Center has awarded scholarships to the following high school seniors: Jessica Olson and Wendy Noriega, Ferris; Michelle Pursel, North Central; Nicole Rose, Rogers; and Luzviminda Carpenter, Ferris.
