Marianne Love Honored For Distinguished Teaching

Sandpoint High School teacher Marianne Love received the Whitman College Award for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching and received a certificate at the college’s commencement ceremonies last month.

Love, who has taught English and journalism at Sandpoint High School since 1969, received the award based on her ability to inspire student interest in a particular subject, the ability to combine strict discipline with fun learning, contribute to students’ college preparation and challenge them to higher levels of criticism and analysis.

Love currently advises the high school student newspaper and started an advertising/graphics program that now publishes large athletic programs on an annual basis.

In addition, she advised the high school drill team for nine years, the school’s annual for 14 years, the senior class for three years and the student council for four years.

She has also published a book and writes as a monthly columnist for The Spokesman-Review.

Love was nominated by former student and recent Whitman graduate Angela Warren of Cocolalla.

Stierle, a 1992 graduate of Sandpoint High School, received training in drill, ceremonies, weapons, map reading, military courtesy, justice, history and traditions and first aid.

Jessica Kathleen McHenry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dee R. McHenry of Hayden Lake, recently earned a Bachelor of Science in business with a concentration in accounting from Pensacola Christian College in Florida.

McHenry was one of 545 students who received their degrees from the liberal arts college that offers over 60 programs of study.

The following students were chosen as Lakeland Junior High School’s Students-of-the-Month for May: Harrison Bertsch, ninth grade; Alexis Minter, eighth grade; and Sarena Munroe, seventh grade.
