Phelps Opts To Sign With Jays, Will Report To Medicine Hat
After thinking about it for a night, Lakeland High School catcher Josh Phelps decided to turn pro Thursday.
Phelps, selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the amateur draft on Tuesday, signed what he called “a very generous offer for the 10th round.”
Phelps will report June 17 to Medicine Hat, Alberta, site of Toronto’s rookie advanced team in the Pioneer League.
Phelps wouldn’t reveal specific numbers about the contract, but did say that his college education will be paid for if his pro baseball career flops.
“It’s almost impossible anymore to get a full-ride scholarship in college,” Phelps said. “I couldn’t go wrong this way. My education is guaranteed, now I can see how far I can go in pro baseball.”
