Liberia’s Warlords Declare Truce
Three of Liberia’s main warlords agreed Wednesday to disarm their fighters and declare a nationwide cease-fire, effective immediately.
“We ourselves are tired of the war and are now fully committed to disarmament,” said Charles Taylor, who started Liberia’s war in 1989 and heads the National Patriotic Front faction of fighters.
The accord contains no new agreements, but instead reaffirms support for an August 1995 truce that called for disarmament and national elections by the end of this year.
