Robert Alexander “Bones” Hamilton, a standout running back at Stanford from 1933-35, died at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 83.

Utah State assistant David Miller was named an assistant men’s basketball coach at USC.

Ide and Cobra King, two top contenders for the Kentucky Derby, were declared out of the race, making Unbridled’s Song a bigger favorite for the 122nd running at Churchill Downs on May 4. Ide took a misstep during a gallop at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., has a serious tear in a ligament in his right foreleg and will be out at least five months. Cobra King injured a tendon in his left foreleg.

Amid allegations he quit on the team and speculation he might be traded, injured guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf said he hopes to return to the Denver Nuggets before the end of the season.
