Brand X Launches Election Coverage w/LCDC Shot
Even if you can accept this reverse Robin Hood philosophically -- and the members of this newspaper's editorial board do not -- consider the widespread, long-term impact of LCDC's operation. Taxing entities within the two districts will be deprived of those property taxes for many years. Dollars that would have gone to the school district, for example, will enhance LCDC's overflowing coffers. Dollars that should support city services, like fire, police and street improvements, will only bolster LCDC's bank account. As it stands today, a rich LCDC will get richer for the next 18 years, and the other taxing entities within those districts could very well grow poorer. We believe this is not what urban renewal supporters had in mind 10 years ago, and we urge Mayor Sandi Bloem and the Coeur d'Alene City Council to redefine this tremendous community's urban renewal program. It is within their authority to immediately make changes as they see fit/Coeur d'Alene Press.
