An Analogy of Diversity
I’ve heard the adage that America is a ‘melting pot’. I have also heard that America is a ‘salad bowl’. I subscribe to the ‘salad bowl’ analogy. I think tomatoes should stay tomatoes, and that carrots should remain carrots (of course, only if they want to). Salads and stews taste great, but only because, while the flavors blend to an extent, each ingredient retains its own unique essence. Have you ever over-cooked a stew? The result is a gloppy mess that requires shakers full of salt to render edible. I don’t want America (or the world, for that matter) to become bland goo that’s reliant on external spices- there’s enough zest inherent in the world without it. The question becomes, can we recognize and appreciate all the flavors that currently exist?
