Woman’s Club worth saving
It sits there, doors locked, windows shut. No sounds of music and dancing. Nothing. The Woman’s Club on West 9th on the South Hill, a venerable old institution with its always warm welcome to friend and stranger alike, may be coming to the end of its long history. Dependent on the modest income from renting out its dance floors, meeting rooms and auditorium, it has no war chest to see it through this pandemic.
Spokane is a rich, powerful and unique city. The disease afflicting it will not threaten its existence. Prospects for the Woman’s Club, however, are quite another story. If the club’s lights blink out permanently, a little bit of the history and quality of life of this great city blinks out as well.
Some people reading this may feel as I do, that a venue where friends have gathered together for years and a new face has always been welcomed to join in the dance, should not be allowed to die. Perhaps a little aid from each of us can help to ensure that this beloved old institution will survive into its second century.
