A 78-year-old man was killed north of Soap Lake Thursday morning when his truck overturned and came to a rest in Lake Lenore.

Harold Chadwick was driving southbound on Highway 17 near milepost 86 when he lost control of his 1996 Ford F150 pickup truck, rotated clockwise and went off a west embankment, Washington State Patrol troopers said in a news release. The vehicle rolled several times and came to a rest on its top, halfway submerged in the lake.

The vehicle’s passenger, 44-year-old Connie Chadwick, was transported to Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake where she remains in critical condition.

Trooper Brian Moore, spokesman for WSP, said the driver was driving too fast for conditions. Both occupants were wearing seat belts.

Highway 17 was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear wreckage. It was reopened by 3 p.m.
