Hudson Elynuik’s goal helps Spokane Chiefs sweep Prince George

From staff reports

PRINCE GEORGE B.C. – Hudson Elynuik scored the eventual game-winner in the second period and the Spokane Chiefs downed the Prince George Cougars for the second night in a row, 5-1, to sweep the two-game Western Hockey League road series at CN Centre on Saturday.

Riley Woods notched his second goals in as many games and had an assist, while Rykr Cole, Nolan Reid and Eli Zummack picked up their first markers of the season. Hayden Ostir added a pair of assists.

Dawson Weatherill made 24 saves to pick up his second win.

The Chiefs (2-0) actually trailed early, as Jared Bethune beat Weatherill just 4 minutes, 25 seconds into the contest. That would be the highlight of the game for Prince George (0-2).

Cole scored 28 seconds later – on a goal originally credited to Woods – and it was all Chiefs after that. Elynuik’s goal came on a back-door play and made it 2-1 after one period. Reid added his early in the second on a one-timer during four-on-four play.

Zummack scored into an empty net with exactly 2 minutes left in the contest, and Woods added another with 19 seconds remaining.

The Chiefs remain without the services of Kailer Yamamoto (Edmonton Oilers) and Jaret Anderson-Dolan (Los Angeles Kings), still with their respective NHL teams during preseason camp. Neither suited up in NHL action on Saturday night.

Spokane faces Kootenay in Cranbrook, B.C. on Friday before opening its home slate Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the same Ice.

The original version of this story stated Riley Woods scored two goals. WHL.com updated its official scoring and we edited this story for accuracy.
