Area roundup: Eastern Washington captures Big Sky women’s soccer title

Chloe Williams and Devan Talley each notched a goal and an assist and the Eastern Washington Eagles (13-4-1, 7-0-1) breezed to a 4-2 victory over the Idaho State Bengals (3-13, 2-6) in Big Sky Conference women’s soccer action on Friday in Pocatello.

Williams’ effort gave her conference career records of 40 goals and 99 points and helped the Eagles earn their second Big Sky regular-season title and first since 2004. Eastern will host the conference tournament on Nov. 1-5.

“It’s great to see our players accomplish our goal of hosting the tournament,” Eagles fourth-year coach Chad Bodnar said, “and I’m extremely proud of all of them as well as our staff. We have more goals to accomplish this season and a lot of work left to do. We’ll enjoy this tonight and get back to work tomorrow.”

Bridget Daley scored three unanswered goals to rally the Idaho Vandals (6-9-2, 2-5-1) to a 3-2 victory over the Weber State Wildcats (3-11-2, 2-4-2) in Big Sky action in Ogden, Utah.

Daley came to the rescue after the Bengals jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 12:09 into the match. Daley scored her first goal in the 22nd minute to pull the Vandals within 2-1 at the half. Daley added second-half goals in the 57th and 86th minutes.

Volleyball

California had five players tally at least nine kills, led by the 11 of Mima Mirkovic, and the Golden Bears (12-8, 3-6) rolled to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21 victory over the Washington State Cougars (13-8, 2-7) in Pac-12 Conference play in Berkeley, California.

Taylor Mims had a match-high 20 kills for WSU, while Casey Schoenlein added 16 kills.
