Area roundup: EWU’s Emma Murillo highest local placer at NCAA Track and Field Championships
Eastern Washington Eagles thrower Emma Murillo was the highest local placer at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Wednesday in Eugene.
Murillo finished 16th in the women’s javelin with a throw of 156 feet, 3 inches.
Washington State’s Jesse Jorgensen finished 17th in the men’s 800-meter semifinals.
Jorgensen, a junior from Puyallup, Washington, was fourth in his heat – the slowest of the day – and clocked in at 1:50.01.
Idaho Vandals pole vaulter Matt Sullivan placed 22nd for the men after clearing 16 feet, 8 3/4 inches.
Shadle Park graduate Andrea Harrison, running for BYU, failed to advance to the finals in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase after placing 19th in the semifinals with a time of 10:23.81. Eastern Washington’s Catie Arrigoni also failed to advance after placing 20th with a time of 10:24.66.
Newport graduate Aaron Castle, now at the University of Arizona, finished 22nd in the men’s shot put with a toss of 57-4 3/4.
Basketball
Skyler White, a Bellevue, Washington, native will transfer from George Washington University to play basketball for the Idaho Vandals men’s team, announced UI head coach Don Verlin.
The 6-foot-6, 238-pound forward played in 17 games last season for the Colonials and hit 50 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Volleyball
Washington State Cougars sophomore Emmy Allen will tour China with a Pac-12 All-Star team this month.
Allen, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Mill Creek, Washington, was an honorable mention on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team. She totaled 166 kills and a .231 attack percentage this past season.
